The 37th annual Mifflinburg Christkindl Market runs each December in downtown Mifflinburg. The oldest outdoor Christmas market in the US, the Christkindl Market of Mifflinburg, PA, began in 1989 to celebrate the community's German heritage. Over 100 stalls, most small sheds, line the streets and feature a mixture of locally-made food and craft vendors from around the region. Vendors sell traditional gifts found at German and Austrian markets—schwibbögen (hand-carved candle arches), nussknacker (nutcrackers), räuchermann (wooden figurines used as incense burners). Local craftsmen build German-style decorations and community groups have learned to make authentic German foods to sell at the market. Expect serious foot traffic— this event has grown to tens of thousands of visitors.
